Anfield legend Jan Molby has urged Liverpool to sign a creative midfielder in the shape of Kai Havertz, telling Hotel Tia that the Bayer Leverkusen star could be a Bruno Fernandes-esque presence in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

There are not many positions in this Liverpool squad which could do with a bit of reinforcement. But if there is one area where the 2019 European champions are perhaps slightly lacking, it is in the cutting edge department.

Klopp’s midfield is high on legs, energy and determination. But neither Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum nor Fabinho are famed for their ability to open up a defence with an inch-perfect through-ball.

The cynics may point out that Liverpool have never adequately replaced the enigmatic Philippe Coutinho, even if the Merseyside giants have gone from strength to strength since the Brazilian international left for Barcelona two years ago.

But with the lack of genuine match-winning midfileders coming into sharp focus after the Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid in March, Molby has joined the growing contingent who believe Germany international Havertz could be the final piece in Klopp’s jigsaw.

“It might hurt me to say this a little bit, but if you look at the impact Bruno Fernandes has had at Manchester United, now I would love Liverpool to sign that type of a midfield player,” says the three-time First Division champion.

“[I want] a midfield player that brings something different. Who would that be? The young boy Kai Havertz looks a really, really good player.”

According to The Express, Klopp had actually made Havertz, author of 18 goals and assists this season, his number one summer target.

But with the ongoing global health crisis likely to put many a mega-money transfer on the back burner, Molby and Liverpool may have to be patient and wait until 2021.
