David Seaman thinks Alexandre Lacazette has been offered a new Arsenal contract, but it’s probably ‘not up to the numbers he has been looking for’, as he told his own podcast.
Following the saga surrounding Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and him being stripped of the Arsenal captaincy, it’s Lacazette who is currently wearing the armband on a temporary basis.
But the 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season, so questions still remain about whether he will still be on the club’s books next season.
That’s probably why there is a hesitation to hand him that captaincy permanently because he might not be here in June.
Either way, Seaman thinks a new offer is on the table for Lacazette and he’s a player that the club can’t afford to lose.
“The only problem (with Lacazette being captain), he only has this season to go, hasn’t he?” said Seaman.
“If he signs a new contract, then put a clause saying ‘by the way, you can be captain as well’.
On whether he has been offered a new deal: “I haven’t heard that he has. I would imagine that he has been offered one. It’s probably not up to the numbers he has been looking for.
“We have seen now, especially with Aubameyang, we need someone like him. If you let Lacazette go, then you are losing out on a really good striker. We have all seen what he is capable of.”
With Arsenal having a number of young guns on their books, a player like Lacazette becomes more valuable, especially with Aubameyang seemingly out of the picture now.
Performane-wise, he is doing the business for Mikel Arteta and leading the line very well.
During Lacazette’s time at the club, under various managers, he has always been the one to be dropped to the bench after the club has been on a bad run or the first to be subbed off.
But the Frenchman is now earning those regular minutes and he is producing the goods for his side.
