It has been a bit of a mixed day for Motherwell fans.

While Stephen O’Donnell has put pen to paper on a new contract, committing his long-term future to the Fir Park club, his fellow Scotland international now appears to have one foot and a few toes out the exit door.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Motherwell manager Graham Alexander has confirmed that Declan Gallagher will be a free agent in a matter of months; a rumoured extension clause seemingly nothing more than smoke and mirrors.

“He is out of contract in the summer. I’m an optimist but I’m a realist as well because I know he will have suitors,” Alexander said.

The Motherwell captain has been linked with the likes of Burnley, West Brom and Aberdeen recently.

But with Celtic expressing their interest, as reported by TEAMtalk, there appears to be a growing acceptance among the Fir Park fanbase that Gallagher will soon be waving goodbye.

Celtic are, after all, Gallagher’s boyhood club.

Ten years after he failed to make the grade at Parkhead, farmed out to Clyde after a grand total of zero first-team appearances, the late-blooming centre-back would be forgiven for thinking he has unfinished business in the green half of Glasgow.
