‘Really exciting’: Sky pundit claims Liverpool loanee becoming ‘key player’ for his country

Danny Gabbidon has heaped praise on Liverpool winger Harry Wilson, during Sky Sports’ live coverage of Wales’ win over Finland on Wednesday night, and claimed he is becoming a ‘key’ player for his country.

Wilson opened the scoring at the Cardiff City Stadium – where he is currently on loan at from Liverpool – with Tottenham’s Gareth Bale providing him with the lovely-weighted through ball.

With a player of Bale’s calibre around him, Wilson is seemingly thriving and is part of a squad that will be looking to match, or even better, their semi-final finish from Euro 2016 at the delayed Euro 2020 next summer.

Former Wales defender Gabbidon understands the pressure of putting on the Welsh shirt and he was asked whether there is now more responsibility on the shoulders of a Wilson.

“Yes, he is one of them,” said Gabbidon. “As we said before the game, they have so many options in those forward areas, some really exciting players and all with different kind of attributes. And he is one of those key players.

“I think sometimes in games, he can affect the games more and we all know about what he can do from his shots from distance, his set-piece deliveries and free-kicks.

“But I think he is the type of player that you need to get him into those pockets and keep feeding him the ball. And he’s capable of doing what he did tonight. He has got goals in his game. Great run for his goal this evening.”

Wilson, 23, was on-loan at Bournemouth last season, but he couldn’t stop their relegation, and after thriving at Derby two seasons ago, he has since returned to the second-tier to rediscover some form.

It’s pretty clear that his future lies away from Anfield and it’s just a case of him finding a new home for the long term.

The set-piece specialist showed glimpses of what he’s capable of in the top-tier last season, but it was just a small amount, and he will be hoping he can showcase his talents with the best in England’s top-flight once again if things go well for him this season.
