Tim Sherwood stated that he finds it ‘really difficult to tell’ why Harry Kane was playing out on the left for Tottenham during their 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, as he told Premier League Productions (19/09/21 at 6:45 pm).
It was a game to forget for Spurs, their 28-year-old star striker and the man in the dugout.
After 45 minutes, the signs were encouraging for Spurs, but that soon changed when N’Golo Kante entered the action in the second-half.
When Kane is ripping opposition apart and Tottenham are on top, then him dropping deep, or drifting out wide isn’t too much of a problem.
But when it happens when Tottenham are struggling, as they were against their London rivals, then it doesn’t look good at all.
And Sherwood was just left baffled by what he was seeing regarding Kane over the weekend and the tactics to play him out on the left.
“It’s really difficult to tell why they have done it,” said Sherwood. “What I would say is that you want Harry Kane in the middle of the goal.
“You want him to get on the end of opportunities and you want him backing in on the edge of the box with chances to shoot. He has been starved of service, during the early part of the season when he has got back into the side.
“It was such a poor performance. I am not sure about the changes Nuno made as well – Harry Kane was dropping too deep, far too deep for my liking and we saw nothing of Kane.”

Five games in and Kane is yet to get off the mark in the Premier League.
Perhaps these midweek games – in the League Cup or the UEFA Conference League – will springboard him back into form.
There’s no action from Europe for Spurs this week as they take on Wolves in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
Surely Nuno has to play his strongest XI? Or will he bring in some younger players, or more senior squad members in order to get the Tottenham ship running once again?
