Alan Shearer has claimed that he is ‘really concerned’ for Leeds United after positive results for the likes of Newcastle over the weekend, as he told Premier League Productions (20/02/22 at 7:20 pm).

The Newcastle legend added that ‘nothing ever changes’ with Leeds following their 4-2 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

Apart from Norwich City and Everton, every other team below Marcelo Bielsa’s side picked up valuable points over the weekend.

Despite being without Allan Saint-Maximin, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, the Magpies recorded a 1-1 draw at Champions League-chasing, West Ham.

Burnley put three past Brighton at the Amex and Roy Hodgson picked up his first three points away at Aston Villa.

Putting all of that into account, and Leeds’ defensive woes, Shearer sent this blunt message to the Yorkshire side.

“I’d rather have the points, as Leeds have,” said Shearer. “I’d be really concerned.

“The results for Watford, Burnley and Newcastle. I would be really concerned with Leeds when you look at the goals against column, which is 50.

“Nothing ever changes with Leeds, with the way they play and are so open. They are terrible defensively.”

That’s 50 goals conceded after 24 Premier League matches for Leeds – already four fewer than the entirety of the last campaign.

It would be quite the shock if they don’t add to that on Wednesday night when they travel down to Merseyside to take on Liverpool.

The Reds can close the gap on leaders Manchester City to three points, after their defeat to Tottenham.

All of this bodes well for the likes of Newcastle because, the more teams that get dragged into this dogfight, the more chances they have of survival.
