Filip Helander is rapidly closing in on a return to senior action at Rangers.
The Sweden international hasn’t kicked a ball for Rangers since September due to injury.
That means that the towering central defender hasn’t yet played under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who replaced Steven Gerrard at Ibrox back in November.
However, the Dutch manager revealed via the club’s Twitter account on Tuesday that the 28-year-old – who cost Rangers £3.5 million under Gerrard – will more than likely be involved this weekend.
The Light Blues visit Annan Athletic in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup in what looks to be Helander’s comeback outing.
Here’s what Van Bronckhorst said about his player: “Helander is really close to start getting minutes again. Hopefully, we can get him involved at the weekend.”
Frustrated
Helander might be even more annoyed with Van Bronckhorst’s decision last week, then.
The former Bologna powerhouse was left out of Rangers’ Europa League squad for the second half of the campaign.
However, knowing how close he was to a return, the massive Swede will be extra disappointed not to have made Van Bronckhorst’s selection.
That being said, overall Helander could and should be thrilled just to be playing football again and although Annan are hardly Europa League standard, it’s a start nevertheless.
