Glenn Hoddle and Darren Bent praised the ‘really clever’ Tottenham Hotspur duo Son Heung-min and Harry Kane following their 1-0 win over Brighton on Saturday at the Amex Stadium, as he told Premier League Productions (08/10/22 at 7:30 pm).
Tottenham legend Hoddle praised the manner in which Harry Kane scored his goal, after he glanced a well-directed header over Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez following Son’s cross.
It wasn’t the greatest of games, from an attacking sense from Spurs, but they were solid, well-organised and tactically aware in defence.
Tottenham started the game brightest and used that to open the scoring, before Brighton, whose new coach Roberto De Zerbi was taking charge of his first game, started to dominate the game.
The home team had a lot of the ball, but in truth, Hugo Lloris in between the sticks wasn’t getting his jersey too dirty because Spurs just kept suffocating Brighton, forcing them to overplay and make mistakes any time they tried to attack their box.
Nonetheless, when discussing Kane’s goal, and his link-up with his partner in crime Son, both Hoddle and Bent were full of praise for the duo.
“It’s not an easy finish, either, but when you give them types of opportunities to someone like Harry, then he makes it look simple,” said Bent. “And that’s the difference between both sides, with what Spurs have between Son and Kane and how well they combined.
“Really clever header from Harry Kane. Gets onside, uses the pace and directs the ball before the keeper can get there.”
Hoddle added: “All the Brighton players are looking at the ball. It’s a cute little ball. Son does brilliantly. He’s whipping it to the back post. He’s not really picking Harry out, but it’s such a subtle header.
“It’s just a reaction. It’s instinct. It’s like a batsman and a bouncer is coming at you. It was a really clever goal in many ways because he had split seconds to react.”
SON JUST LACKING THAT FINAL TOUCH
On paper, it’s another game without a goal for Son, but as he proved with his offside goal, there is still something there, even if he is still snatching at chances.
Plus, the South Korean star still managed to contribute yesterday and Spurs also managed all three points, even though Son is fully aware that he isn’t at his best.
But whilst he is still looking for top form, Kane is hitting the right notes, and if Son leaves his best form for the second half of the campaign, then it will probably be even more helpful to Spurs.
Otherwise, it’s a good response from the team, especially from a defensive standpoint, after their north London derby defeat last week.
