Natalie Gedra has shared how Joelinton was glad that a decision went in Newcastle United’s favour amid their controversial match against Arsenal on Saturday.
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United secured a 1-0 win at St James’ Park thanks to an Anthony Gordon goal, but those in Arsenal colours, especially manager Mikel Arteta, were fuming that the goal was allowed to stand.
One bone Arsenal had to pick was that they felt Joelinton fouled his fellow countryman Gabriel Magalhaes as the cross went into the box from Joe Willock.
The Newcastle United midfielder certainly had two hands on Gabriel Magalhaes’ back as he attempted to clear the ball away, but despite a lengthy VAR check, amid other things being looked at, the goal stood.
Brazil journalist Natalie Gedra shared that she spoke to Joelinton and Gabriel Magalhaes, and the Newcastle man insisted that it was ‘nothing’ and he was glad that a call went their way because things had been going against them this season, as she told Premier League Productions (06/11/23 at 2:10 pm).
That was just one of the reasons why you could have disallowed the goal, with Arsenal even questioning if the ball went out of play before the ball was crossed into the box.
That’s why Mikel Arteta was seething after the match, as Brazil journalist Natalie Gedra shared her thoughts.
Did Joelinton push Gabriel?
“Actually, after the match, both of them spoke about it,” said Gedra.
“What I found interesting about Joelinton is that he went ‘no, no it was nothing. We had during the season a lot of decisions against us, so it was good that went (our way)’.
“Really, we are playing this game now?!”

Fortunate Newcastle
You have to say, if the shoe was on the other foot, then Eddie Howe would have been the one ranting and raving away.
The issue the officials have is that there were many reasons why that goal could or should have been chalked off.
And whilst they didn’t have the camera angles or the technology to see if the ball did go out of play, surely they saw the push on Gabriel?
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya didn’t hold himself in glory either because he didn’t deal with the cross, and amid all the drama around VAR, his error went unnoticed.
