Ian Wright has told Wrighty’s House Podcast that he has been left annoyed at people saying ‘you are going well over the top’ when praising Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
The boyhood Villa fan made his first competitive start for England on Sunday and impressed with his performance despite his country suffering a 2-0 defeat to Belgium in the UEFA Nations League.
For a long while now, fans have been crying for Grealish to be handed such an opportunity and despite Gareth Southgate previously being reluctant, he now seems to have opened his eyes at the qualities the Villa man can bring to the table.
Former Arsenal striker Wright shared that Grealish ‘brings chaos’ when playing, as he defended the recent hype around him.
“What I am saying with Jack is that all we need is for Jack to pop up in them areas and just keep things moving,” said Wright. “Just like the little bit of skill he did at the end against Meunier.
“The way he was taking people on. Dropping back into the left-back spot and whipping a great ball into the left-wing area. Just someone, wherever he ends up on the pitch, he is going to progress the ball.
“The thing what I am saying what really annoys me is that people are saying ‘oh, you are going well over the top’. I am not got going over the top. But when you watch us against Croatia [at the WC) with no-one bringing the chaos. He brings chaos.”
Grealish’s performance in Belgium was just the norm for the Solihull-born playmaker because he has been producing that at Villa Park for years.
It does seem as though he has had to prove himself that little bit more, but either way, his talents are now shining through.
England take on Iceland in a dead-rubber UEFA Nations League encounter tonight and Grealish will be hoping to now mark this game with his first goal for his country.
