Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde has been quoted by Montevideo as saying that if he could sign one player at the Santiago Bernabeu, he wants Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur. The two are teammates for Uruguay.

Bentancur, 24, has hit the ground running at Spurs since joining the club on a permanent basis from Juventus in January. Already clocking up 18 games for Spurs, he has become a crucial part of the side – and also, quite creative.

In his last three Premier League appearances, he laid on three assists – two of which came in a 5-0 win over Norwich. He has made his £18million fee look like a bargain, since agreeing a four-and-a-half-year Spurs contract.

Bentancur is only 24, but he already boasts 259 club appearances – and 49 more for his country. Valverde is an admirer of a player that has surprised even Dimitar Berbatov with his form – and he wants him at Real Madrid.

It would be an enormous blow. What Bentancur gives Spurs, like Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski do, is mass experience at a young age. To have more than 300 professional games under his belt at 24 is incredible.

Madrid might want another midfielder this summer. Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are well past 30. There is a considerable difference in quality between the starting three, along with Casemeiro, to Madrid’s back-up.

Bentancur would bridge that gap and while he would have to play cover to Kroos and Modric initially – could be the future of that midfield. But Spurs have got to keep him, and right now, there looks like no danger of a sale.
