Yet another disappointing display from Real Madrid, as Manchester City stun Los Blancos at home.

Real Madrid’s season went from bad to worse last night, as they were beaten at home by Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League.

After a difficult loss to Celta Vigo on Sunday that cost them the top spot on the La Liga table, Real Madrid couldn’t bounce back against their European rivals.

Real Madrid register lowest shots on target at home in UCL since 2004

Against Manchester City, Real Madrid had 16 shot attempts across 90 minutes, with only one shot on target – the goal from Rodrygo.

This marks the first time in 21 years that Real Madrid have registered just one shot on target at home in the Santiago Bernabeu. The previous game came during the 2003-04 Champions League season.

By contrast, the Manchester City offense was far more clinical, registering 12 shots, 8 of which were on target.

The shots from Nik O’Reilly in the 35th minute and a penalty from Erling Haaland in the 43rd minute managed to find the back of the net.

Of course, it should be mentioned that Madrid were without Kylian Mbappe, their top scorer this season. But given the wealth of offensive talent Xabi Alonso has at his disposal, this is a disastrous statistic to put up.

Xabi Alonso is under pressure at Real Madrid

There’s no denying that Xabi Alonso is on the hot seat at Real Madrid. We know Florentino Perez is not a patient man, even with new coaches.

And after Los Blancos squandered their four-point lead over F.C. Barcelona in a matter of weeks, Perez will be rethinking the decision to hire Alonso.

In the last 10 years, Real Madrid have fired three head coaches during the season: Rafa Benitez during the 2015-16 season, and both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari in 2018-19.

Alonso, for now, has the support of the players, who came out in his defense after the defeat. But he must turn things around fast, or he will be out of a job.
