Jose Mourinho will be unveiled as Real Madrid manager later this month, the club have confirmed.

Thirteen years since his departure from arguably the biggest club in the world, Mourinho has signed a three-year contract.

The 62-year-old had long been expected to replace Alvaro Arbeloa as Madrid manager but his move from Benfica was entirely dependent on Florentino Perez winning their presidential elections.

Perez did – beating rival Enrique Riquelme – and Real Madrid have now confirmed when they will officially unveil their new manager.

Mourinho to hold first Real Madrid press conference on July 13

A statement posted on Real Madrid’s official website read: “The Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F., meeting today, Thursday, June 11, and presided over by Florentino Perez, has agreed to appoint Jose Mourinho as the first team’s head coach for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029.

“Jose Mourinho will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day preseason begins.”

Mourinho has signed a three-year contract in the Spanish capital, which would take him up to 2029. Perez’s eighth term runs until 2030.

Still, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager does not often last that long at clubs. In fact, the last time he spent a full three years at a club was his last tenure as Madrid manager, which ran from 2010 to 2013.

He did manage Roma between 2021 and 2024 but that tenure ended months before his three-year anniversary in the job.

During his first stint in the Madrid job, Mourinho won a La Liga title to break Barcelona’s era of dominance under former manager Pep Guardiola, while also lifting a Copa del Rey.

The two managers created an historic rivalry for the ages, one that defined an entire era of football in the early 2010s.

Perez has reportedly long been a fan of Mourinho following his first tenure as manager despite the fact he was unable to win the Champions League, the tournament that has been synonymous with Madrid throughout their history.
