Sergio Ramos’ message of support for Brahim Diaz

On social media, Ramos sent a heartfelt message to Diaz after his costly miss in the AFCON final.

“Only those with the personality to take them miss. Always keep your head high, brother,” Ramos wrote.

He added: “Football always offers a chance for revenge, and you’ve given us much more than what slipped away today. Let’s go for the next one with even more strength! Always on my team.”

The message resonated across football communities, highlighting the respect Ramos has for Díaz’s courage in stepping up in such a high-pressure moment.

As a veteran of countless finals himself, Ramos’ words were seen as a reminder that one moment does not define a player’s career.

Brahim Diaz’s AFCON final miss and what comes next

In the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final, Morocco and Senegal were locked in a tense scoreless draw late in normal time when a penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review.

After a controversial protest by Senegal that saw their players temporarily leave the field, Diaz stepped up to take the spot kick.

His Panenka-style attempt was easily saved by Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy, and the match proceeded to extra time, where Pape Gueye scored to give Senegal a 1-0 victory.

Diaz’s performance throughout the tournament had been strong, he reached the final as one of Morocco’s key creators and finished as one of the top scorers. In the wake of the miss, he took to social media to apologise to fans, expressing deep personal regret while reaffirming his commitment to fight on and make supporters proud.

Now, attention turns to how he bounces back with Real Madrid and for his national side, with many believing he has the talent and character to overcome this setback and continue to build an impressive legacy in world football.
