Luka Modric has signed a contract extension to keep him at Real Madrid for another year, despite receiving a number of huge offers to move to Saudi Arabia.
The 37-year-old was set to become a free agent this summer, and he could have followed Karim Benzema in departing the Santiago Bernabeu, but has confirmed that he will remain in the Spanish capital for at least one more season.
Luka Modric has become a club legend in his time at Real Madrid, and he has made it clear on his Twitter account that remaining at Los Blancos was his main desire.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Modric received some very highly-paid offers to move to the Saudi Arabian league. However, the Croatian superstar was not interested in departing ‘the club of his life.’
Modric could have reduced role next season
With the arrival of England international Jude Bellingham, as well as the contract extensions of Toni Kroos and Dani Ceballos, Real Madrid have a whole host of top-quality options at central midfield next season.
This could allow Modric to have a more reduced role, where he could be saved for the most significant occasions, and given plenty of rotation and rest in between appearances.
The likes of Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga and Aurielen Tchouameni are expected to be the future of the Real Madrid midfield, and they will have two of the best mentors possible in Modric and Kroos.
The two veterans have won every trophy possible over the last decade for Los Blancos, and both arguably go down as all-time great midfielders and legends of the club. This coming season will see them pass on the torch to the future generation, and Bellingham may benefit from training and playing alongside someone with the quality and experience of Modric.
Modric will no longer need to be relied upon on a weekly basis, but will still be able to produce moments of magic on the biggest occasions for the Spanish giants.
