Everton winger Andros Townsend has raved about Tottenham Hotspur central defender Eric Dier on BBC Sport while watching his former Spurs teammate in action for England against Italy at San Siro in the UEFA Nations League on Friday evening.
Townsend was following the match for BBC Sport, and the Englishman was really impressed by how Dier, who can also play as a defender, was doing at the back for Gareth Southgate’s side.
Tottenham star Dier started in the centre of a back-three for England that had Kyle Walker of Manchester City and Manchester United’s Harry Maguire.
The 28-year-old, who cost Tottenham £4 million in transfer fees in August 2014 (BBC Sport), was strong and assured at the back and made some important blocks in the first half.
Dier was far too easily beaten by Manolo Gabbiadini towards the end of the game, but overall it was a very encouraging display from a player who has become a huge figure at Tottenham under head coach Antonio Conte.

Townsend said about Dier during the match: “I think focusing on the positive – I really like the back three, especially Eric Dier.
“Really composed, really calm as a real figure. He’s communicating well with the two defenders next to him.
“He’s the one that is looking to break lines forward. Always looking to start the England attacks.”
Eric Dier is at the top of his game at the moment, and if he continues to play well for Tottenham Hotspur in the coming weeks, then he is pretty much guaranteed a place in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.
