Celtic have snapped up Ipswich youngster Kundai Benyu.
Celtic today confirmed on their official website that they have snapped up midfielder Kundai Benyu on a four-year contract.
The Bhoys had already made one new signing this summer by bringing in winger Jonny Hayes from Aberdeen, but Brendan Rodgers was still on the lookout for new signings.
General view of Celtic Park
Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football last season – winning all three domestic competitions they competed in without losing a game – means that the starting line-up is strong, but Rodgers wanted more depth and players for the future.
He has got just that, as midfielder Benyu has joined the Bhoys from Championship side Ipswich Town, where he came up through the ranks before rejecting their contract offers to stay this summer.
Instead, Benyu moves on and joins Celtic on a four-year deal, after the 19-year-old midfielder impressed during a loan spell with non-league side Aldershot last season.
With the teenage midfielder out of contract, Celtic have been able to sign him for minimal compensation, exploiting cross-border contract rules much as they did to sign Moussa Dembele from Fulham last summer.
Ipswich fans
Whilst Celtic fans will be excited to see their promising new signing in action, but it leaves Ipswich fans to react to the talented teenager leaving Portman Road, with split opinions among supporters on Twitter.
Some feel that Benyu had a poor attitude and won’t be missed given the number of options Mick McCarthy has in midfield, though others believe that Celtic have landed a real talent, and think he could be the next young player to play at a high level after leaving the Ipswich youth ranks, much as Connor Wickham and Jordan Rhodes did.
Only time will tell for Benyu and Celtic, but Ipswich fans appear divided on whether Benyu leaving the club is bad news or not.
