PSV Eindhoven’s Denzel Dumfries has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Newcastle after he revealed his desire to become a Premier League player.
In an interview with Dutch outlet Voetbal International, the 10-cap Netherlands international said: ‘I do feel that, as a footballer and as a person, I am ready to take the next step abroad.
‘The Premier League and the Bundesliga, they suit my game. I can see the headlines again, but I think I can say this and I think everyone can see that I am ready to move on.’
Now, this is extremely encouraging news for Newcastle.
Why? Well, the Chronicle recently revealed that the Magpies are monitoring the right-back, and have been doing so for months.
It is mentioned that Newcastle were scouting the £13.5 million-rated defender even before lockdown in November.
Steve Bruce’s side are now monitoring players from a video hub at St James’ Park, according to the Chronicle.
The fact that Dumfries is actively hoping to move to the Premier League should come as a boost to Newcastle, in our view.
The 24-year-old PSV captain sounds ready to take the next step, which means he shouldn’t need a lot of convincing from where we stand.
If Bruce can bring Dumfries to Tyneside, it would be an excellent signing.
Newcastle are quite weak at right-back, and don’t have a recognised starter in that position – DeAndre Yedlin, Javier Manquillo and Emil Krath have all shared the role.
Even Jacob Murphy has had a runout at right-back.
However, in Dumfries, Newcastle would have a serious upgrade on those aforementioned names.
The Rotterdam-born defender has two goals and five assists this season, and would represent a signing of real pedigree with the potential to improve.
