Just 24 hours ago, Mark Warburton’s hopes of a reunion with David Button at Nottingham Forest appeared to be going up in smoke.

GetWestLondon reported that Reading were closing in on a deal to sign the Fulham goalkeeper, who Warburton described as ‘the best in the league’ during their hugely successful time together at Brentford in 2015, per ITV.

With the unpopular Vladimir Stojkovic told to find a new club by Forest, according to the Nottingham Post, a new goalkeeper is needed at the City Ground. And who better than a player the manager knows and trusts better than anyone?

And it appears that Forest have been handed a sudden and rather unexpected boost. According to Sky Sports, Reading have had a £2 million bid accepted for Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone, who is set to undergo a medical at the Madejski on Wednesday.

Therefore, it appears that the Italian, rather that Button, will be the man handpicked to replace Ali Al Habsi, who moved to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal recently.

Consequently, Forest’s hopes of landing Button this summer, as reported by the South London Press, remain intact. The 28-year-old didn’t have his most consistent season between the sticks at Fulham, dropped for the final weeks of the campaign after an error-strewn performance in April’s 4-2 defeat to Derby County.

However, Warburton is a huge admirer of his talents and he will be hoping that, with Button on board, Forest could replicate his Brentford side of 2014/15 and surprisingly earn a place in the end of season play-offs.
