The former Reading man just dropped down the pecking order at St Mary’s.
Shane Long of Southampton look dejected
Southampton have made their biggest move in their fight for Premier League survival, by bringing in Guido Carrillo from Monaco. The Argentine attacker joined the club in a deal reported by ESPN to be a club record £19.2 million transfer and will hopefully fire Southampton to safety.
But his arrival will not be welcomed by Shane Long. The Irishman has been shoved down the pecking order and must surely be considering his long-term future at the club after this latest transfer.

This, should be music to the ears of Reading.
Last season the Berkshire side made it to the Championship play-off final, losing to Huddersfield Town on penalties at Wembley. But this year they have struggled. Jaap Stam’s side currently lie 18th in the table and are in a relegation battle.
One reason why they have struggled is their lack of goals and Long would be a nostalgic potential solution to that problem.
Reading’s Irish forward Shane Long
The 31-year-old joined Reading from Cork City in 2005 and spent six years at the Madejski Stadium. He was part of their record breaking 2005-06 Championship winning squad and scored 25 goals in his final full season with the Royals.
Now he has dropped won the pecking order Long, who has settled roots in the Berkshire town, would be a fantastic signing to appease the frustrated fans at the Mad Stad, whether it be a loan or permanent move.
Reading should look to the past, to maintain their Championship future.
