Reading took Norwich City’s Nelson Oliveira on loan last season.
According to a report by Get Reading, Championship club Reading can’t afford to sign Norwich City’s Nelson Oliveira on his current wages after the Norwich City man has been dealt a promotion pay rise.
The Portuguese striker spent the past six months on loan at Reading, making a big impression and helping the Berkshire club preserve their Championship status despite suffering a hamstring injury late on.
Oliveira scored three goals in nine starts for Reading, including a winner in a 2-1 victory over Norwich City’s biggest rivals Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
Following the Canaries’ promotion, however, Oliveira has been rewarded with a pay rise as per a clause in his contract and his current salary, expected to be nearer to £30,000 per week, is way over Reading’s budget.
Reading are also said to be in a ‘soft transfer embargo’ amid Financial Fair Play rules, meaning they won’t be able to sign anyone this summer with approval from the Football League first.
Oliveira, who is continuing to train at Reading, has one year left on his Norwich deal.
Even if the Norfolk club were happy to let him go on the cheap, his reported wages would cause most Championship clubs a problem let alone Reading who are likely to be nearer the bottom in terms of overall budgets.
