Reading needed a penalty shoot-out to knock League One side MK Dons out of the EFL Cup in their second round match-up.

Left-back Jordan Obita scored the decisive spot-kick with a shot placed high in the middle of the goal. However, despite the eventual victory in the game, sections of the crowd greeted the Royals’ performance with boos and jeers during the match.

The night began poorly for Reading, with Dean Bowditch slotting away a penalty in the first half, before winger Callum Harriott reduced the arrears for the home side with a tremendous shot from a fair distance. The game entered extra time, and although Reading got their noses in front with another goal from Harriott, MK Dons levelled just four minutes later through Kabongo Tshimanga to leave the scores even at 2-2 after 120 minutes of football. The Dons were wasteful when it came to the shoot-out, and Reading ran out 4-2 winners on penalties.

Despite the Royals advancing to the next round of the competition, concern has been raised by fans on Twitter surrounding negativity in the stands during the game.

Reading lie just one place above the relegation places in the Championship, having brought in plenty of new faces over the summer under new manager Stam. However, injuries have left many of their players unavailable for selection, and the team have taken just four points from their first four games.

Despite fans’ perhaps understandable frustration at the club’s current predicament, Royals supporters on Twitter have urged their fellow followers to have patience with their team this season. Here are some examples:
