Reading manager Jaap Stam has explained why the club did not pursue the signing of former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan, when speaking at a press conference, and quoted by getreading.co.uk.
The Royals have started their Championship campaign inconsistently this term, with two wins, two losses and a draw leaving them in 15th place in the table.
Stam made numerous signings over the summer transfer window, but wanted to bolster his attacking options with the acquisition of Ghana international Gyan, but his fitness levels prevented any kind of move accord to the Dutchman, as quoted by getreading.co.uk:
Asamoah Gyan during his time at Sunderland
“He wasn’t in good shape. Our medical people are not going to lie. That’s why we made the decision not to sign him.”
The Berkshire outfit have managed to score just five goals in five Championship outings so far this season, and are still desperately short of natural goal scorers.
Gyan’s international record of 48 goals in 95 outings for Ghana is evidence of his pedigree, but Stam insisted he will not allow passengers in his Reading side:
“If we’re going to be spending money – we need to make sure he is fit and ready to perform.”

The Dutchman also divulged that the club are still in the market for another striker, with their focus on the free agent market:
“We were looking for another striker, we didn’t succeed – but it’s still possible if someone is on a free. We’re still looking for a certain player who can give you a boost.”
Reading resume their Championship campaign with a home match against Ipswich on Friday night.
