Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should bring the defender back to Ibrox.
If Rangers are to challenge Celtic next season, they need some new players.
And there is no position more in need of addressing for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard this summer than centre-back.
Yes, Rangers will have Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic, an excellent pairing, but Gareth McAuley turns 40 this year and Joe Worrall might well return to his parent club.
McAuley has plenty of experience but hasn’t been a fantastic addition.
Gerrard needs another experienced centre-back but one with a lot more left in the tank than the Northern Irishman, and re-signing Darren McGregor should be considered.
McGregor, who turns 34 in August, has just been rewarded with a one-year contract extension at Hibernian for another excellent season at Easter Road.
This is a player who manhandled and successfully contained Alfredo Morelos on a number of occasions this season, a player who the Gers actually released under Mark Warburton in 2015, which looks to have been a mistake.
The Scot is still a class Premiership player, whereas several of the centre-backs Warburton signed instead of McGregor flopped big time in the top flight. Danny Wilson is now in the MLS, and Rob Kiernan is a League One player in England.
McGregor wouldn’t play ahead of an in-form Goldson or Katic, but Gerrard is going to need depth in that position and the Hibs star might feel as if he has a point to prove at Ibrox.
