Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley has been linked with a return to Cardiff City recently and his potential signing could have an impact on the future of Aron Gunnarsson.

Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley looks set to depart the club in the summer after his contract runs out next month.

According to the Croyden Advertiser, the Welsh international is close to sealing a move back to Cardiff City, the club where he started his career.

If Ledley does make a return back to the Cardiff City Stadium then the immediate future of current Bluebirds midfielder Aron Gunnarsson will be less certain.

Gunnarsson has made 238 appearances for the club since moving from Coventry City in 2011 and has been a key component in the Cardiff midfield; he won the club’s Player of the year award last season.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of next season, the Iceland international looks no closer to signing a new deal and this could force the club to consider selling one of their prized assets.

If the 28-year-old was to become available then he will not be short of potential suitors.

The signing of Ledley would send a statement across the Championship. The Welshman is entering the prime years of his career and many would consider his level being higher than England’s second tier.

It is not out of the question that Gunnarsson and Ledley could play in the same team but both players share similar attributes and traits.

Cardiff will likely not want to sell Gunnarsson to a Championship rival but they may decide not to run the risk of losing him on a free transfer. The arrival of Ledley would make his potential sale seem a more viable option.
