RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara has hinted that he could leave the Bundesliga club months after Newcastle United reportedly made a £40m bid for the 24-year-old.

Speaking to the Guardian, the Mali international teased that a Premier League transfer could be on the cards if Haidara was to leave Leipzig. Though the midfielder did also state that he is currently happy with his time in east Germany, with the UEFA Champions League side recently progressing from their group stage in Europe.

Haidara has been of interest to Premier League sides for some time now, with the Daily Mail even reporting that a £40m was made by Newcastle to sign the midfield maestro. However, it appears that the bid fell on deaf ears as the African star remained in Germany with Leipzig.

Newcastle are expected to be busy in January and central midfield is a position the club could look at signing with Eddie Howe’s side well in the mix to finish in a European spot. And Haidara could remerge as a target for the Toon if Leipzig are open to a sale in 2023.

Indeed, Haidara leaving Leipzig seems unlikely at this point given how impressive the Bundesliga side have been this season under new manager Marco Rose. And when asked about his future, the midfielder teased that a transfer could be in the works in the future, though he has no intentions of departing just yet.

Haidara said: “I have a few good friends playing there. But I’m at Leipzig and I’m working hard to continue my development. The matches in the Premier League are very intense. It’s always a good game, no matter which club plays. We’ll see what happens. But I’m happy at Leipzig.”

Haidara might be staying in Leipzig for now, but there’s a good chance that the midfielder will want to leave the Bundesliga club next year. And for Newcastle, they must pounce at this opportunity when it arrives in the months to come.

After all, midfield is a position that the Magpies must invest in if they’re to improve their squad and take it to the next level. And Haidara’s profile is perfect for what Howe wants in a player in this role, with a Leipzig and Champions League education exactly what will excite supporters too.
