Former Tottenham man Paul Mitchell has joined RB Leipzig.
Bundesliga side RB Leipzig have today confirmed on their official website that they have appointed Paul Mitchell as their new Head of Recruitment and Development.
The German side have been one of the most impressive teams in Europe in terms of recruitment in recent years, having focused almost exclusively on landing top young talent and nurturing them into stars.
The likes of Dayot Upamecano, Liverpool-bound Naby Keita, Emil Forsberg, Marcel Sabitzer and Timo Werner are all such instances, with Sporting Director Ralf Rangnick receiving much of the praise.
Leipzig players huddle
However, that hasn’t stopped Leipzig from attempting to boost their recruitment ranks even further, and they have today brought in ex-Tottenham Hotspur man Mitchell to aid their transfer business.
Mitchell, 36, was a trusted lieutenant of Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton before following the Argentinian to North London in 2014, helping oversee deals for the likes of Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Victor Wanyama and Heung-min Son.
However, Mitchell began a rather acrimonious and surprising departure from Tottenham in August 2016, resigning from his post as the club’s Head of Recruitment before being forced to work through a notice period of around eight months – half of what Spurs wanted.
Sky Sports reported back in April that Mitchell had interest from Rangers after finally being released from his Tottenham contract, but that deal didn’t materialise, and Mitchell had been out of football for almost a year.
Now back in the game with Leipzig, Mitchell’s strange career trajectory has its next chapter, and he will be hoping to help turn Leipzig into legitimate contenders to Bayern Munich in German football.
