RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann says the interest shown in reported Arsenal target Dayot Upamecano is negatively affecting his form, Sport.de report.

The French central defender has been linked with a summer move.

According to Talksport, Arsenal are keen to sign Upamecano whose contract in Leipzig expires in 2021 while containing a £53 million release clause.

German football has returned following the Covid-19 suspension. But Upamecano’s form of late hasn’t exactly strengthened his burgeoning reputation.

Nagelsmann, in contrast, feels interest in his player has had a negative impact.

“He is an incredible bull. he defends a lot of things away, even if he is too late. Upa knows himself he is not playing at the top of his game right now. He is a young guy who is rumoured to be associated with top clubs. It is normal for him to have weaker phases,” Nagelsmann explained.

Upamencao has started four of Leipzig’s five Bundesliga games since the return. However, in that time Negelsmann’s side have conceded five goals.

Moreover, the 21-year-old was sent off for two yellow cards after just 43 minutes last time out as Leipzig drew 1-1 at home to bottom of the league Paderborn.

Arsenal must strengthen their defence this summer. Upamecano’s form, however, may be a warning sign with the Frenchman showing a lack of experience.

Leipzig will surely prefer to sell Upamecano rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2021.

But Sport.de claim Leipzig are working hard to extend the defender’s deal in Germany.

If the Gunners are serious in their interest, then they must move fast. However, the financial implications from the global health crisis may curb the Premier League club’s spending this summer.
