Derby should swoop for Brentford centre-back Harlee Dean in the summer, and a potential move would not be out of the question.

Dean has been an influential figure at the back for the Bees this season and has impressed in his first full season as skipper.

The 25-year-old’s current contract runs out at Griffin Park next summer and talks have already taken place over a new deal.

He has made close to 250 appearances for the West London club after joining them in 2011 from Southampton.

Despite this, contract negotiations began last month but Brentford boss Dean Smith has not revealed much about the progress of the talks.

“Harlee’s representatives have spoken to the club and it’s up to them to sort out,” he told Get West London.

“He’s become captain and had a really good season and long may that continue. I think he’s matured as a player and become a top 10 centre half as well.”

Brentford fans can be forgiven for being concerned, Jake Bidwell and David Button left for Fulham last summer when approaching the final year of their contracts to avoid the risk of losing them on a free transfer.

Derby could be looking to bolster their defensive options as Gary Rowett tries to take the Rams back to the Premier League.

A busy summer is predicted at Pride Park and the subject of centre half is a hot topic amongst supporters. If Rowett does make a move for Dean then it would command a hefty transfer fee.

Despite this, Dean has plenty of Championship experience and if securing his signature would be a shrewd piece of business.
