Derby County secured a routine victory over Wolves in their final home game of the season, as they prepare to revive their promotion ambitions next season.
Derby’s Bradley Johnson celebrates scoring their second goal with David Nugent
Derby, who travel to Rotherham United in their final game of the 2016/17 campaign, wrapped up their home campaign with a win. Manager Gary Rowett would have been pleased to see his side repay a bumper crowd with a convincing win.
Goals from David Nugent, Bradley Johnson and Craig Bryson gave the Rams a 3-1 victory over Wolves, whose side had a makeshift defence and who were reduced to 10 men when Ivan Cavaleiro was sent off for violent conduct in the first half.
The result lifted Derby up to ninth place, but they are eleven points off the play-off places after an inconsistent season for the Rams. After spending the past three seasons in the midst of a promotion bid, this season will be put down as largely disappointing by the vast majority of their supporters.
There was still pride at stake, however, and a chance for players to convince the recently appointed Rowett that they can play a part in his future plans.
This is how their fans reacted on Twitter to the result and a few could not help having a little dig at their rivals, Nottingham Forest’s, as their Championship status is now under threat following their 2-0 defeat at QPR:
