Aston Villa assistant Ray Wilkins has explained where he feels Tim Sherwood is a fortunate man.

Aston Villa assistant boss Ray Wilkins has told talkSPORT that he feels the club’s manager Tim Sherwood is fortunate to have so much knowledge in terms of youth players around Europe.

Sherwood has been challenged in a big way by the current transfer window, in terms of needing replacements for key players who have decided that their futures lay away from Villa Park.

Wilkins has also stressed the importance of the club doing any remaining transfer business quickly, which he feels will give the players the maximum amount of time to settle in with the return of the Premier League now just over one week away.

“The players out there are enormous in volume and Tim’s very fortunate in having worked in the academy at Tottenham, he knows a lot of young players throughout Europe, that’s been an enormous help,” he told talkSPORT.

“It has to happen as quickly because he wants to bed them in with the way he wants them to play.”

Important factors with any new signing

Wilkins is spot on to suggest that business needs to happen quickly if there are any more new players that Sherwood feels he needs.

However, Sherwood has to make sure that anyone else he’s looking at ticks the right boxes in terms of fitting into the Aston Villa brand and mentality.

It’s no good him signing players for the sake of extra numbers if he can’t be sure that they are going to try their best, with the best interests of the club at heart.

It’s been a difficult summer so far for the club, but there is time and potential for further refinements.
