Wayne Rooney has left Manchester United for Everton.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United star believes that the return of Wayne Rooney to Everton will see Barkley pushed out of Goodison Park.
The England international forward has rejoined the Toffees from United on a two-year contract, as announced on the Merseyside outfit’s official website.
Wilkins has praised Everton for securing the services of the 31-year-old, but he believes that Rooney’s return could see Barkley leave.
Barkley is 23 years of age and operates as an attacking midfielder; he has been on the books of Everton his entire professional club football career so far.
The England international, though, is out of contract at the Toffees at the end of next season, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.
The attacking midfielder scored five goals and provided eight assists in 36 Premier League appearances for Everton during the 2016-17 campaign.
“I think it’s a fantastic deal for Everton, I really do,” Wilkins told talkSPORT about Rooney’s move to Everton. “31 years of age, yeah he has had a long career, but he has had a very successful career.”
“Having taken Wayne, I could see Ross actually moving on now,” added Wilkins. “Obviously, a couple of guys brought in for advanced positions at Everton, and I think Ross Barkley may well move on now.”
