Liverpool made their first signing of the summer by bringing in Mohamed Salah from Roma.

Ray Wilkins has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 10th July, that Liverpool shouldn’t have signed Mohamed Salah from Roma.

Liverpool snapped up Salah earlier in the transfer window, with the Egyptian becoming their first summer signing.

However, Wilkins does not believe that Liverpool needed any more attackers – and they should have gone all out for Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Southampton's Virgil van Dijk heads clear

“You’ve got to say, priorities. When you’re looking at what Liverpool have, they have a fantastic forward division. Can they defend? No they can’t,” Wilkins said.

“Van Dijk is the man, but they’ve already spent £34 million on Salah from Roma. Keep that money and put it towards Van Dijk. They have enough forward options, I don’t think they needed Salah.”

Liverpool have previously suggested that they have ended their interest in Van Dijk.

The Reds are still expected to strengthen their backline this summer, with Jurgen Klopp on the look out for new options.

Liverpool looked shaky in defence last term, and solidifying his side will be one of Klopp’s most important tasks over the transfer window.

The Reds will be determined to consolidate their position in the top four next term, after working so hard to make it back into the Champions League.

Liverpool start their Premier League season with a match against Watford in August.
