Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports that Tottenham Hotspur must change tact if they are to get the best out of striker Fernando Llorente.

The Spaniard is in line to deputise for Harry Kane in Saturday’s trip to Manchester United, with Tottenham’s leading scorer having been ruled out with a hamstring injury, according to Sky Sports.

Llorente started Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham United, his eighth appearance without a goal since joining from Swansea City in the summer.

But former United midfielder Wilkins believes that the 32-year-old target man is capable of filling in for Kane if Tottenham start playing to his strengths.

“They have to use Llorente in the right manner. I watched the game the other night against West Ham and when he started the game they never crossed the ball, Tottenham,” Wilkins told Sky Sports.

“They went through the box, through the middle of the box, and when he was on the field they never crossed the ball at all. When he went off and they went 3-2 down, they started crossing the ball in.

“It was pretty evident when he was at Swansea last year that he scored some unbelievable headers. The guy is 6ft 4in; put the ball in the box because he is a very, very good finisher.”

All of Llorente’s 15 league goals for Swansea last season were scored from inside the penalty area, seven of them with his head.

In Kieran Trippier and Christian Eriksen, Spurs have two of the best crossers in the ball in the Premier League and would be more than capable of providing the type of service Llorente thrives on.
