The Arsenal forward has struggled to impress again this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, broadcast May 13th, Ray Wilkins has said that Theo Walcott is not good enough to earn an England call up.
The Arsenal forward has endured another disappointing campaign for the Gunners despite being given his chance to impress in a central role for the club.
He looked certain to miss out on England’s squad for Euro 2016 as a result as Roy Hodgson had options ahead of him.
However, the injuries to Arsenal teammates Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and then Alex Oxlade Chamberlain have potentially opened up a place for him.
Wilkins though, believes he shouldn’t be in as at present he is neither fit enough nor good enough for a place in the squad.
“Theo Walcott probably hasn’t played 80 minutes in five games,” he told Sky Sports.
“I don’t think he’s ready, I don’t think he’s fit enough and at this moment in time I don’t he’s good enough.”
It would certainly be surprising to see Walcott included in the England squad this summer given how he has performed this season.
Indeed, if he is being taken a striking option then veteran Jermain Defoe should be far ahead of him in the pecking order.
The Sunderland striker has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season and would be a much smarter pick than Walcott for Euro 2016.
