Former Rangers and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Ray Wilkins said on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning (broadcast from 10am, September 23, 2016) that Sunderland are a Championship team at the moment.

Sunderland are playing in the Premier League this season, but there is a serious danger that they could get relegated from the English top flight at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.

The Black Cats are second from bottom in the league table at the moment with just a point from five matches.

David Moyes’s side will face Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Sunderland won in midweek, though, getting the better of Championship club QPR 2-1 away from home at Loftus Road in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Wilkins has suggested that Sunderland are a Championship level team at the moment.

“I think at the moment, I don’t want to be too disrespectful to Sunderland, but they won in the week at Queens Park Rangers,” said Wilkins on the Sky Sports Now show on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning (broadcast from 10am, September 23, 2016).

“The Championship looks as if it might be their level at the moment. They are batting above their weight a hell of a lot, Sunderland.”

Sunderland are one of the biggest clubs of England and have a massive fanbase.

However, over the past few years, the Black Cats have been involved in relegation battles, and this season it is going to be the same old story.
