Everton produced a marvellous comeback to beat Watford at Goodison Park on Sunday.
Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports that Everton interim manager David Unsworth is a “great footballing bloke” as he graded the Toffees’ late win against Watford on Sunday with an A.
Everton looked on course to suffer their fourth straight defeat under 44-year-old Unsworth, after losing to Chelsea, Leicester City and Lyon, as they went 2-0 down. However, a spirited comeback saw them win 3-2.
Goals from Oumar Niasse, Dom Calvert-Lewin and Leighton Baines saw Everton hold on to three points, even after former Toffees midfielder Tom Cleverley missed a last-gasp penalty.
The win sees Everton climb out of the Premier League’s bottom three and into a healthier 16th place, but are still without a manager after sacking Ronald Koeman last month.
Former Chelsea and Aston Villa assistant manager Wilkins claimed the Everton players fought for their caretaker manager, something that owner Farhad Moshiri will want to see when appointing his Koeman’s successor.
“It was an incredible game, and when they went 2-0 down you thought ‘good grief’, and I felt for David Unsworth,” Wilkins said. “But the guts they showed to fight for him was brilliant. I loved that.
“The atmosphere in that ground must have been toxic at 2-0, and to fight for David as they did, I was thrilled to see it. He’s a great footballing bloke.”
Everton will be considering their options as they look to permanently replace Koeman during the international break, with their next fixture coming up against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on November 18.
