Ray Wilkins: Everton should have signed Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has continued to score prolifically, while Everton are struggling for goals.

Ray Wilkins has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 14th November, that Everton should have taken a gamble on Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

Everton have been left short up-front this season, following the departure of Romelu Lukaku.

The Toffees went after Chelsea’s Diego Costa and Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud in the summer transfer window, but were unable to get a deal for either of the pair over the line.

And Wilkins feels that Celtic forward Griffiths would have made a good alternative for the Toffees.

“He’s a goalscorer,” Wilkins said of the Celtic striker.

“People will say he’s a little one, not a big one. But at the end of the day Griffiths puts the ball in the back of the net. He’s got a good left-foot.”

Griffiths has scored prolifically at Celtic, but his previous spell in English football was at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Griffiths is currently competing with Moussa Dembele for a place in Celtic’s starting line-up, with Brendan Rodgers often rotating the pair.

Everton failed to bring in an out-an-out forward last summer, and both Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney have struggled when leading the line.

Everton are currently in 15th place in the Premier League table, after a disappointing campaign to date.
