Rangers legend Ray Wilkins has told the club’s official podcast that he thinks Pedro Caixinha has made a ‘very, very wise decision’ in targeting a local coach to work alongside him.

Caixinha completed his move from Al-Gharafa earlier this month, replacing Mark Warburton in the Ibrox hot seat following his departure in February.

The Portuguese boss, formerly of Uniao Leiria, Nacional and Santos Laguna, has brought three member of staff to Glasgow with him, as Helder Baptista, Pedro Malta and Jose Belman have arrived at Ibrox.

However, Caixinha still has one role to fill, having admitted that he wants to bring in a ‘local’ coach to work alongside him in order to aid his transition into Scottish football.

Three candidates are in contention for the job, as ex-Rangers players John Brown, Barry Ferguson and Peter Lovenkrands have all spoken to their former club about the role, with Ferguson the current favourite.

Rangers will be hoping to make an appointment sooner rather than later, and former Rangers hero Ray Wilkins has praised Caixinha’s decision to appoint somebody with a knowledge of Rangers and Scottish football.

Wilkins noted that Caixinha’s compatriot Jose Mourinho made a similar move at Chelsea by landing Steve Clarke, and that worked perfectly for the Blues.

Wilkins, speaking to Rangers’ official podcast, added that he thinks Caixinha has made a ‘very, very wise decision’ in targeting a local coach, as he needs to learn more about Rangers.

“It’s very, very important indeed,” said Wilkins. “If you look at Jose Mourinho when he took over at Chelsea, he employed Steve Clarke, who knew everything about Chelsea in that period, and he was extremely successful. I think that’s exactly the right way to go, because he does need to know certain things about Rangers, but from the outside, you don’t know what a fantastic football club this is. He does need someone who knows the history and the layout of Glasgow Rangers, so I think it’s a very, very wise decision that he’s making,” he added.
