Eric Dier’s place in Tottenham Hotspur’s team has come under pressure from Victor Wanyama.
Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 24th October, that he feels Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier has been pushed to one side this season.
Dier enjoyed a wonderful campaign last term, when he established himself as a key member of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
The 22-year-old was moved forward into defensive midfield, and he thrived in a shielding role in front of Tottenham’s defence.
Dier’s good form saw him become an England international, and he is now recognised as one of the finest young talents in the Premier League.
However, Wilkins believes that the former Sporting Lisbon man’s form has dipped slightly at the beginning of this season, following the arrival of Victor Wanyama from Southampton.
“The one player it seems to have affected a touch this year is Eric Dier,” Wilkins said. “Wanyama has come in and done a magnificent job in that holding midfield role and Eric seems to have been pushed to the side a bit. He’s not so prominent.”
Dier has still started regularly for Tottenham this season, but he was moved to centre-back against Bournemouth in Pochettino’s side’s latest match.
Dier was required to cover for Toby Alderweireld in the heart of Spurs’ defence, with the Belgian international currently out injured.
Tottenham managed to collect a point at Dean Court, after a 0-0 draw, which continues their unbeaten start to the campaign.
