Aston Villa had been linked with former Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor for much of the summer transfer window.
Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports News on the morning of 4th November, that signing Emmanuel Adebayor in the summer may have kept him and Tim Sherwood in their jobs at Aston Villa.
The Claret and Blues had targeted Adebayor during the transfer window, but they were unable to land the experienced front-man and had to settle for other targets.
Villa ended up bringing in the likes of Rudy Gestede, Jordan Ayew and Scott Sinclair to improve their potency up front, but Wilkins still felt that they were short of attacking options.
He said: “Had we have got Adebayor in, when it was very, very close, that would have helped us immensely.
“He’s a proven Premier League goalscorer, so that would have helped us.”
Wilkins and Sherwood were dismissed from their posts at Villa Park at the start of last week, and they leave the club in a dangerous position.
The Midlands outfit are currently rooted to the foot of the Premier League table, and their scoring issues have been all too evident throughout the campaign.
Villa netted just nine goals in the 10 Premier League matches Sherwood took charge of, with most of their attacking additions struggling to make an immediate impact.
As a result of this poor form, Villa have turned to Remi Garde to save them, and the Frenchman will take control of his first match this weekend, when his side takes on league leaders Manchester City.
