The Swiss international joined Mark Warburton’s Rangers side at Ibrox for free last week.

Rangers take on Celtic in the Old Firm derby this weekend and the fixture could see the Gers potentially hand a debut to Swiss defender Philippe Senderos.

Rangers made the move for the free agent with the transfer window drawing to a close and after missing out on Joleon Lescott, who headed to AEK Athens from Aston Villa.

It is a transfer that has divided opinion at Ibrox. Some fans see it as a shrewd addition whilst others believe that Senderos was always overrated and has now surpassed his expiration date.

But one former Rangers player believes it is a good move from Mark Warburton.

Ray Wilkins, who spent two years as a player at Ibrox, believes Senderos can bring a lot to Glasgow, starting with the Old Firm derby.

The former England international told Sky Sports News HQ today (08/09/16):

“Philippe Senderos, who I was with at Fulham, smashing guy.

“He wasn’t quite up to the Premier League standard but I think going to Glasgow with his experience of world football (will be good.)

“He wouldn’t have played in too many games as big as this for a long time. He’ll be looking forward to it immensely. The experience he has got from obviously playing in Champions League games for Arsenal, for AC Milan, Valencia he was at for a touch. He’s played Premier League so his experience will be invaluable.”

Senderos is just 31-years-old and has a wealth of experience. Wilkins knows the talents of the Rangers newbie well, having worked with him during his time as assistant head coach at Fulham.

The Swiss has certainly had his injury troubles in the past but his vast experience in the game will hopefully prove invaluable to Warburton’s Rangers side in this Scottish Premiership campaign.
