Ronald Koeman has confirmed he would welcome a return for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney at Everton.
Ray Wilkins has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 31st October, that Everton could well be title contenders if they brought in Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.
Ronald Koeman has increased talk that Rooney could return to Everton, after confirming he would like the 31-year-old at Goodison Park.
And Wilkins believes that Everton would be very well placed, if they were able to bring Rooney back.
“How about a 4-4-2 there at Everton?” Wilkins enthused. “Bolasie on one side, you could play anybody on the left. Then have Bolasie on the right and Lukaku and Rooney up-front.
“Who knows [if that could be enough to win them the title]. “Koeman took Southampton into Europe, and they don’t have the squad of players that Everton have.
“There’s no reason why Everton can’t consider themselves to have the prospect of Champions League football.”
Rooney began his career at Everton, before moving to United – where he has been ever since.
The England international’s future at United has been called into question, because he has not been playing much for the Red Devils lately.
Jose Mourinho has opted to use Zlatan Ibrahimovic as his main striker, and there is now a belief that a return to Everton could be a possibility.
When Rooney was at Goodison Park as a teenager, he played 77 times for the Toffees’ senior side and scored 17 goals.
