West Ham United fans have not been impressed by the appointment of David Moyes as their new manager.

West Ham have handed Moyes the job after sacking Slaven Bilic following a 4-1 defeat to Liverpool which left the club languishing in the relegation zone.

On the whole supporters have been far from happy with the appointment.

And although many have warmed to the Scotsman following his various interviews and press conference this week, there remain doubts over his ability to improve the club’s fortunes given his recent failings.

But Hammers legend Ray Stewart has backed his fellow Scot to prove his worth in an interview with whufc.com and has also suggested what the most successful manager of all, Sir Alex Ferguson, would make of it.

“He (Moyes) is close to Sir Alex Ferguson,” Stewart told West Ham’s official website.

“(Sir Alex) had a fantastic friendship with John Lyall and will I’m sure be pleased to see him take over at West Ham.

“David knows how important it is for this club to be successful and he will be absolutely desperate to provide that success, there is no doubt about that.”

Ferguson hand picked Moyes to be his successor at Manchester United.

And while things did not necessarily work out how both Moyes and the Red Devils would have hoped it was always going to prove the impossible job.

Ferguson did indeed enjoy a close relationship with Lyall and led the tributes at a memorial service in the legendary Hammers manager’s honour back in 2006.

So if Moyes needs to brush up on his Hammers history Sir Alex will be able to fill him in.
