Speaking to The Design Museum to celebrate the launch of its new exhibition, Football: Designing the Beautiful Game, Ray Parlour has been chatting about the Arsenal captaincy.
The Gunners haven’t had a permanent captain since Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of the role in late 2021, and it remains to be seen who will be bestowed with this honour.
Alexandre Lacazette has taken up the mantle in recent weeks, while Granit Xhaka has past experience in the role.
However, Parlour says he would love to see Kieran Tierney replace Aubameyang and become the club’s next captain.
What’s been said?
Parlour says that he wants Tierney to be Arsenal’s next captain.
“I would love to see Kieran Tierney become captain of Arsenal. He’s been a brilliant signing from Celtic and I think his personality really shines through on the pitch. His desire and commitment to the cause is never in question. I think he also has the balance between youth and experience to be respected by everybody within the dressing room,” Parlour said.
“It’s a proud moment to be named club captain, but I don’t think who wears the armband is the most important factor because Arsenal should have leaders all over the pitch who want to embrace that responsibility. The entire squad needs to be brave enough to criticise each other and to challenge the team to become more successful if they’re to rival the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool in the coming years.”

Backed
Kieran Tierney has received plenty of backing to become the new Arsenal captain.
From David Seaman to Martin Keown and Parlour, a number of Arsenal legends want Tierney to get the armband.
To be honest, he’s a great pick. The Scot is a leader on the pitch already and he’s one of the first names on Mikel Arteta’s teamsheet every week.
At the age of just 24, Tierney could be the skipper for the next decade.
