Boyhood West Ham United fan Ray Parlour has been reacting to reports the club are set to hand David Moyes full control of transfers.
West Ham were reported to be in the process of appointing a director of football as part of an overhaul behind the scenes.
The Hammers were said to be keen to appoint an experienced director of football at the end of the season in a bid to head off criticism from fans of their recruitment strategy.
As recent protests highlighted, supporters are angry with co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold and their vice-chairman Karren Brady over what they feel is a string of broken promises from transfer spending to their move to the London Stadium.
One of their biggest bones of contention has been the club’s transfer policy since the big move to Stratford which was used by the owners as their raison d’etre in leaving Upton Park.
Sullivan, who has been directly involved in signings and dealing with agents, has confirmed he will take a step back and hand the responsibility to an experienced figure when revealing the recruitment overhaul, as previously reported by HITC.com.
Speculation has been rife over who will be appointed to the Hammers role with the likes of Harry Redknapp and Barry Fry linked.
And Ray Parlour has told talkSPORT that will be a good thing for the club.
“Give him a chance, absolutely,” Parlour told talkSPORT.
“He’s done the job that they brought him in to do … they’ve still got five games to go but you expect them to have enough.
“I know it didn’t work out for him at Manchester United but he was very successful at Everton. If i was a manager I wouldn’t want a director of football saying ‘Right here’s a player, you’ve got to go and deal with it’.
“These managers watch so much football, they know exactly what players they need or want around the club. Because sometimes it can upset the others, if you buy a player sometimes you’ve got to look into their attitude, can he fit in with the players we’ve already got?
“Sometimes I don’t understand with all the different departments you have now in football. The manager is the most important person and a director of football doesn’t (always) work.
“I think David Moyes has got the experience and know how, and he’s got a great backroom staff as well lets not forget that, Stuart Pearce who has worked with so many players who he knows, he was a great character, a winner on the pitch (Alan Irvine, Billy McKinlay) he’s got them there to bounce off and say ‘What do you think of this player and that player’.
“Behind the scenes they work so hard, people don’t see, they watch so many players, watching games, watching videos and I totally agree that the manager should make the final decision on what players come into the club.”
