Premier League outfit West Ham United are reportedly ready to pay the £45m release-clause in the contract of Celta Vigo’s La Liga striker Maxi Gomez.
Ray Parlour believes Maxi Gomez could be the player who turns West Ham United into contenders for a top six finish in the Premier League next season, speaking on Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (8 July, am).
One of the longest-running transfer sagas in European football appears to be finally reaching it’s conclusion.
West Ham have been linked with Celta Vigo striker Gomez for the last 12 months and, according to Sky, he has already agreed personal terms with the London giants.
And Manuel Pellegrini’s side look set to blow Valencia out of the water by triggering his £45 million release clause. Los Che, meanwhile, were offering £29 million with Santi Mina heading to the Balaidos as part of the deal.
As it stands, West Ham appear to be in pole position for Gomez, a natural-born goal poacher who could be the dead-eyed assassin Pellegrini needs to transform his side from a mid-table outfit into a genuine European contender.
At least that is what former Arsenal and Middlesbrough midfielder Parlour believes.
“West Ham could have an opportunity if they sign Gomez,” Parlour said when asked if the Uruguayan international could help The Hammers finish in the top six.
“He looks like he’d be a good signing.”
West Ham’s need for a new striker has only been enhanced by the departure of Marko Arnautovic to China on Monday. Andy Carroll and Lucas Perez have gone too with Javier Hernandez, who himself has been tipped to leave, the only centre-forward at Pellegrini’s disposal right now.
