Should Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers take a punt on Ashley Cole? Ray Parlour believes so.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Debate show [broadcast 27th November, 2018], Ray Parlour has suggested that Rangers make a move for Ashley Cole.
Cole, who played with Rangers boss Steven Gerrard for England, is a free agent after being released by Los Angeles Galaxy this week.
The former Arsenal and Chelsea left-back, who turns 38 next month, has enjoyed a trophy-laden career, winning three Premier League titles and the FA Cup on seven occasions.
But Parlour believes that no top-flight English side would take a punt on his former Gunners team-mate due to age, noting that a reunion with Gerrard at Ibrox is a ‘great shout’.
“I’m sure there’ll be lots of clubs interested. Stevie G is a great shout at Rangers. I don’t know who their left back is at the moment but he would be great for the dressing room area,” he told https://www.skysports.com/roi.
“He’s had a fantastic career and I think that he can do a job definitely for another season. I’m not too sure about the Premier League, I’m not sure someone would take a chance on him in the Premier League, certainly the Championship.”
All eyes are on Rangers’ left-back situation at the moment, after Gerrard indirectly told Lee Wallace that he had better options than him.
Wallace hasn’t kicked a ball for the Gers since August, and the former Liverpool midfielder has been using Borna Barisic, centre-midfielder Andy Halliday and right-back Jon Flanagan for that role in recent months.
He may have – or at least claim to have – better left-back options than Wallace, but he certainly doesn’t have better options than Cole, even if is 37 years of age.
