The Everton boss is one of the names being mentioned as a potential successor to Arsene Wenger.
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour
Ray Parlour fears Arsenal have missed their chance to appoint Ronald Koeman as Arsene Wenger’s successor.
Koeman has Everton on course for a European finish in this season’s Premier League, and his side could end the campaign above the sixth-placed Gunners, who lead the Merseyside club on goal difference only.
The Dutchman previously helped Southampton to their best ever finishes in a re-branded top flight for two campaigns running, and is many people’s shout to replace Wenger after the Frenchman’s 20-year tenure turned sour.
But Parlour, who won three league titles and three FA Cups under Wenger, believes Koeman is on to something good at Goodison Park.
“It’s a little bit unfair on Everton, isn’t it?,” the former midfielder told Talksport when asked if Koeman could take the Emirates Stadium reins. “We’re talking about Koeman going to Arsenal. He’s trying to build something at Everton at the moment and he’s doing a great job.
“Koeman would have been the pick for me when he left Southampton but now he’s at a great club like Everton so he might want to grow something there with the owner, say: look we’re going to get a new stadium, we’re going to build these players, got young players coming through as well, keep Lukaku, keep Barkley and maybe we can build on it.”
Everton manager Ronald Koeman
Koeman’s Everton have already beaten Arsenal once this season, and could inflict further pain on the Londoners when the two sides meet on the season’s final day.
The Gunners have qualified for Champions League football in each of Wenger’s full campaigns, but currently trail fourth-placed Manchester City by seven points.
