West Ham United endured a poor summer on the transfer front, it turns out.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Ray Parlour has taken a swipe at West Ham United’s transfer business during the summer.

The Irons are 17th in the Premier League table and one point above the drop zone following Saturday’s 5-1 defeat by Arsenal at The London Stadium.

It was a new low for a West Ham side who look a pale imitation of the team which was challenging for Champions League qualification this time last season.

Going into the summer, the question was whether Slaven Bilic could add real quality to his squad in an effort to help the Hammers mount a better top-four challenge this time around – and the answer is a resounding no.

The Croat brought a total of nine players into the club during the summer but none of them have proven huge successes so far – Andre Ayew joined for a club-record £20.5 million but injury has limited him to only six matches so far.

“I think the recruitment in the summer wasn’t good enough. Whoever bought these players I don’t know. Was it David Gold? Was it Bilic? I don’t know who bought them, but they’re nowhere near the standard that West Ham need,” he told talkSPORT.

“It was a fantastic season for West Ham last year [and] they had to buy quality players to compete again [and they haven’t]”.

Bilic was reportedly under pressure to keep his job but Sky Sports claimed on Monday that co-chairmen David Gold and David Sullivan backed him.

But a heavy defeat in next week’s trip to Liverpool could force the West Ham duo to reconsider their stance.
